of a male. The number of mounts attempted by a male was also scored and recorded. The results of all the experiments were converted to lordosis quotient (LQ), defined as a percentage of full lordosis response (perineum elevated, all four legs extended from the initial crouch position and the head at an angle of 450 from the floor) divided by the number of mounts. Each group consisted of six animals, and each female was tested for 10 min in the presence of a male. The animals were tested for lordosis response at 30 min and at 3 hours after injection of compounds. The effects of the compounds were not transient, because identical results were obtained at 30 min and at 3 hours after infusion. 29. Statistical analysis was done by either of two methods as appropriate: Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA on ranks followed by Dunn's method for comparision of all groups versus control group, or one-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett's method for comparision of all groups versus control group. Sigma Stat (Jandel Corporation) was used. 30. We thank K. Mayo for the sequence of the rat PR mRNA, J. Turcotte for assistance with the binding assays, the staff of the Center for Comparative Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, and D. Scarff for help in the preparation of the figures. Supported in part by N.S. 19327 (NIH) and Research Scientist Development Award grant MH-00885 to J.D.B. and a NIH (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development) grant to B.W.O.

Comparative analyses of animal-tracking data reveal ecological significance of endothermy in fishes.

Despite long evolutionary separations, several sharks and tunas share the ability to maintain slow-twitch, aerobic red muscle (RM) warmer than ambient water. Proximate causes of RM endothermy are well understood, but ultimate causes are unclear. Two advantages often proposed are thermal niche expansion and elevated cruising speeds. The thermal niche hypothesis is generally supported, because fi...

Comparison of Mitochondrial Reactive Oxygen Species Production of Ectothermic and Endothermic Fish Muscle

Recently we demonstrated that the capacity of isolated muscle mitochondria to produce reactive oxygen species, measured as H2O2 efflux, is temperature-sensitive in isolated muscle mitochondria of ectothermic fish and the rat, a representative endothermic mammal. However, at physiological temperatures (15° and 37°C for the fish and rat, respectively), the fraction of total mitochondrial electron...

Regional endothermy as a trigger for gigantism in some extinct macropredatory sharks

Otodontids include some of the largest macropredatory sharks that ever lived, the most extreme case being Otodus (Megaselachus) megalodon. The reasons underlying their gigantism, distribution patterns and extinction have been classically linked with climatic factors and the evolution, radiation and migrations of cetaceans during the Paleogene. However, most of these previous proposals are based...

Functional Innovations and the Conquest of the Oceans by Acanthomorph Fishes.

The world's oceans are home to many fantastic creatures, including about 16,000 species of actinopterygian, or ray-finned, fishes. Notably, 85% of marine fish species come from a single actinopterygian subgroup, the acanthomorph or spiny-rayed fishes. Here, we review eight functional innovations found in marine acanthomorphs that have been instrumental in the adaptive radiation of this group in...

Comparative Physiology of Energy Metabolism: Fishing for Endocrine Signals in the Early Vertebrate Pool

Energy is the common currency of life. To guarantee a homeostatic supply of energy, multiple neuro-endocrine systems have evolved in vertebrates; systems that regulate food intake, metabolism, and distribution of energy. Even subtle (lasting) dysregulation of the delicate balance of energy intake and expenditure may result in severe pathologies. Feeding-related pathologies have fueled research ...

Tuna comparative physiology.

Thunniform swimming, the capacity to conserve metabolic heat in red muscle and other body regions (regional endothermy), an elevated metabolic rate and other physiological rate functions, and a frequency-modulated cardiac output distinguish tunas from most other fishes. These specializations support continuous, relatively fast swimming by tunas and minimize thermal barriers to habitat exploitat...
